French Toast Sticks
From GQ. A really good French toast recipe with brioche, amaretto, warm maple syrup, and a little bourbon and balsamic if you want to take it over the top.
Ingredients
Serves 2
- 2 large eggs plus 1 yolk
- 2 tbsp heavy cream
- 1 pinch cinnamon
- 1 pinch nutmeg
- 1 pinch salt
- Dash of amaretto
- 2 drops vanilla extract
- Butter
- 4 slices brioche or other high-quality white bread, cut 1 inch thick
- Maple syrup
- 4 fresh strawberries
- Dash of bourbon optional
- Dash of balsamic vinegar optional
Method
1. Combine the eggs, cream, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, amaretto, and vanilla. Lightly beat until smooth and blended.
2. Cut the brioche slices into 1 x 3–4 inch sticks and roll them in the egg mixture until well coated.
3. Butter a skillet and warm over medium heat. When the butter is melted and starts to froth, line up the bread sticks and brown on all sides.
4. While the bread is cooking, warm the maple syrup in a small pot. Adding a few drops of balsamic vinegar and bourbon to the syrup is a nice touch.
5. Cut the strawberries in half, place two halves on each stick, and drizzle with warm maple syrup.
Hint: Serve with good smoked bacon, yogurt, and fresh fruit.
